Clearing is the process of clarifying the situation of unaccompanied minor refugees (umF).
Upon arrival in Germany, unaccompanied minor refugees are taken into custody by the Youth Welfare Office. This step is followed by the clearing process, which differs from state to state in terms of length and content. The clearing process is primarily at attempt to answer the following questions:
- How old is the unaccompanied minor refugees (umF)?
- What is state of his/her physical and mental health?
- What information is there about the identity of the child in question?
- Are there any family members in Germany or another EU country?
In the clearing process - if no relatives with custody rights are found - a legal guardian is designated for the child and the child’s place of residence, etc. is clarified.
