Benefits
I am currently on a student visa with a 3 year old child originally from the UK. I am not sure if i am entitled to any benefits such as child benefits or any other social benefits. I currently do not have a job and need financial support. I receive child benefit from the UK as my partner pays taxes in the UK and will be registering to pay taxes here. However the child benefit amount is not as much as the kindergeld, do we need to cancel the UK child benefit to receive kindergeld here or can we be paid the difference?

Dear @i_am_z thank you for reaching out to us!
Your situation seems very complex, especially since the UK is no longer part of the EU.
Nevertheless, you may still be eligible to receive child benefit in Germany or at least the difference between the UK and German payments. One of the main requirements for receiving child benefit is that you hold a residence permit that allows you to work in Germany for at least six months - regardless of whether you are currently working. What matters is that your permit entitles you to work.
Please note that we cannot provide legal advice and are not fully familiar with the UK regulations and the agreements between Germany and the UK after the Brexit.
That's why, I contacted the Familienkasse, the authority who is responsible for child benefit, and they advised that you should submit an application in Germany so they can check your eligibility. There are likely still some bilateral agreements after Brexit, but these need to be checked individually, especially because the child's father is still paying taxes in the UK, and your and your child's residency is in Germany.
If you tell me the city where you currently live, I can have a look for your responsible Familienkasse.
You will need to fill out this application for child benefits and additionally this form, which states that one parent lives abroad. In case you need help filling out the application forms, you can reach out to a migration counseling center in your area. You can enter your zip code on the website of BAMF to find them.
Happy to get your feedback and please let me know if you have further questions.
