Color Copies of Identity Document

Dear TIG members,

I am asking on behalf of my friend. When he was entering Germany he had a copy of his original documents and he showed it to the police. The purpose of carrying the document was for identification purpose if something happened to him on horrible journey to Germany. Now the police has sent him a post and asked him to visit the police station. Is it illegal to carry the copy of your original document in Germany and what he needs to do in this case?

TIA

Dear @Hassan , thank you for contacting us. Carrying a copy of an original document, such as a passport or ID card, is not illegal in Germany per se, but your friend must have the original of the copies. He should go to the police station as requested. If possible, he should bring with him the original documents that match the copies he has previously presented to the police. He may also consider seeking advice from migration counseling agency: https://bamf-navi.bamf.de/de/Themen/Migrationsberatung/ If you have any further questions, please let me know. Best Barbara
