Does my spouse Need A1 German for Renewal/Extension Now That I Hold a Niederlassungserlaubnis?

Hi,

I previously held an EU Blue Card and last month I received my Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent residence). My wife currently holds a family reunion residence permit, which is valid until August 2026. When she applied, she was not required to provide an A1 German certificate because I had a Blue Card at that time.

Since the Ausländerbehörde took my Blue Card when issuing the Niederlassungserlaubnis, I no longer hold Blue Card status. Will my wife now be required to present an A1 German certificate when renewing her residence permit in new months?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi! I am not an expert, just a volunteer here, but I am pretty sure that your wife can extend her residence permit without presenting A1 German.

As I know, the A1 requirement (§30 AufenthG) is checked only when the spouse enters Germany for the first time or applies for the initial residence permit.

Once a spouse already lives in Germany and holds a valid residence permit for family reunion, the conditions for extension are:

  • the marital relationship still exists
  • sufficient income and health insurance are secured
  • no grounds for refusal (e.g., crime, fake marriage, etc.)

You can, of course, confirm this through the Ausländerbehörden.

Good luck,

Anna
