Name change on birth certificate need legal help

I am German born in the 60s. I need to change my middle name on my birth certificate to accompany my other documents from another country where I am a citizen. I need legal help and can't afford to pay $8000 as I am a low income senior. Are there legal assistants, document specialists that can help me. I will pay you of course. I just don't have 4800 euros.

Hi! I’m not a legal expert, but I’d like to share some helpful information. First of all, please note that Handbook Germany is a free platform — nobody here will ask you for money, and all information and guidance shared is provided at no cost.

In Germany, changes to names and entries on a birth certificate are handled by the Standesamt (registry office) where the birth was originally registered. Usually, a name change is only possible under specific legal circumstances. Since your case involves documents from another country, it’s important to clarify directly with the Standesamt what options you have.

For legal support, I know our platform has some contacts to share, right @Daniela_Community_Managerin and @Міла_Модераторка ? But, there are also free advice services you can use from the authorities, like:

  • Migrationsberatung / Sozialberatung at your local Migration office (Ausländerbehörde): They often advise on official procedures free of charge.

I don't know where you are locally, but I found on the München official website that 'If the data on your birth certificate is incorrect, you can request the necessary change in the birth register here.'

Hope this helps,

Anna

Hi, thanks @AnnaGapa_volunteer for the answer!
Here is a link @Orangeville , to a number of migration lawyers that you can contact:

Like I said, Orangeville, I don't know where you are locally. You need to apply to your LOCAL Standesamt and Ausländerbehörde. It means - try googling 'Ausländerbehörde' and the name of the German city you are in. It will give you available contacts to your local Migration office.

Good luck!

Hi thank you. I was born in Pirmasens I don't think they have an Auslandetbehorde but thank you. Im trying to work with the German embassy and I've contacted the Standesamt and they will commence searching the archives. At this point I need a lawyer who will not charge me $8000 and legal advocacy.

A lawyer's service comes with a fee. However, on Rathaus Pirmasens' website, there is information about a legal aid service that is free. Unfortunately, it is all in the German language, but you can try a translator. The page is Beratungs- und Prozesskostenhilfe beantragen. Briefly, it is stated here that:

Citizens who are unable to afford the financial resources necessary to exercise their rights for personal and economic reasons have the option of applying for advice and/or legal aid. Legal aid can be applied for in order to cover the costs of court proceedings and representation in court. Legal aid is granted according to the applicant's financial and income circumstances, with or without an obligation to pay in instalments.

There are also counselling centres in Germany, which provide free counseling and can help clarify your best option in legal issues. Contact a counselling centre affiliated with a welfare organisation, such as Caritas, and seek free counselling before using services that come with a fee, such as legal assistance.

Hope this helps.
