Parental allowance
Hi all :) I hope someone can help me. Here is my situation: I worked in Germany for more than 6 years until June 2024. I got pregnant and my child was born September 2024. In the meantime I moved to a different country in EU due to my husband job but I kept my flat in Germany (as I may come back for work after my maternity leave is over) and I also received the parental allowance for one year (the office knows that I am currently residing outside of Germany with my child, they also send me all the correspondence here ).
Unfortunately my German landlord wants to sell the apartment that I was renting. As I would only come back to Germany around September 2025, do you know if I have to find another flat immediately now to keep my residence in Germany uninterrupted, or is this okay that I won’t be registered for several months in Germany, and only find a flat when I am back? I am mostly concerned about the parental allowance and the insurance. I have tried calling the office but it is very hard to talk to someone in English and my German is not that good.
Many thanks for all the help! Cheers :)
Hello @karolinag ,
thank you for reaching out to us. As far as I know you can only profit from the parental allowance if you are registered in Germany. Being gone for such a long time until September, I think would not be permitted. You will also have to check what that means for your health insurance.
But for this I would strongly advice to also ask the office again. Sometimes they are also able to speak in English.
Maybe also some other community members have some more insight and experiences. Would also be great if you could update us of what the office said, others community members with similar questions can profit from your experience.
Sorry that I could not give you much more detailed information.
Best wishes
