Applying for a Language Course Visa after Opportunity Card Expiry

My Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) will expire at the beginning of December 2025. Since I have not yet found a qualified job, I am planning to apply for a residence permit for a German language course for the next year in order to stay in Germany.

  1. Is it possible to get a language course visa after my Opportunity Card expires?
  2. Regarding the financial requirement: Is it acceptable to use my part-time job salary as proof of financial support? My salary is close to the required amount, and I can also provide additional funds from my bank account to cover the difference. Would this combination be sufficient?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Dear @o.m.8 thank you for reaching out to us.

1. Yes, in principle it is possible to switch from an Opportunity Card to a residence permit for attending a German language course. It is very important that you apply for that before your current residence permit expires. Additionally, your language course has to be at least 18 hours per week. Evening and weekend courses are usually not sufficient.

2. Regarding your financial requirements: You are right that you need to prove that you can cover your livelihood. You can work for 20 hours per week and secure the difference in a blocked account. The foreigners department will check if your funds are enough to secure your entire stay.

Please let me know if you have further questions. I hope you will be able to change your residence permit smoothly! Wish you all the best
