Change in Purpose of Residence Stay
Hi there!
I am a Canadian national and have been living in Germany for 5 years now under a Research visa 18d and have completed my Doctoral degree here. I recently got married to a German citizen and would like to switch my residence to a Spousal Residence 28(1) as I have the B1 language certificate as well. I tried to apply through the Spousal Reunification application online at my local Auslanderbehörde, but they sent an automatic reply that I was applying at the “wrong department”. I also couldn't find any application in their dropdown menu where I can apply for a change in the purpose of my stay. Could someone clarify the procedure to change the purpose of my residency?
Would greatly appreciate any help and guidance in this matter.
Thanks!!!
Congratulations on your doctoral degree and your marriage, @Jupyter
It should be possible to change your residence permit according to §18d to one for family reunification. Did you already checked if it is perhaps possible to choose a "change of purpose"? Unfortunately, every immigration office handles this a little differently in every federal state.
I can have a look at the website for you if you tell me which is your local immigration office. Maybe you can also try and call them to ask at which department you should apply for.
Alternatively, you can also contact a migration counseling center. They often have more local practical experience and can provide more specific help. You can look on the BAMF website yourself, or tell me where you live and I will be happy to help you find one.
