Changing from student visa to freelancer

I'm planning to change visa type from student residence permit (type D) to self-employed/freelancer visa. I heard it's risky, but I don't see any other options. I'm looking for positive recommendations, if you've known a similar case. What are the ways to strengthen my application?

Dear @real thank you for reaching out to us! Welcome to our forum!

In general, it is possible to switch from a student residence permit to one as a freelancer. Nevertheless, the biggest challenge is the financial proof. In which field will you be a freelancer? Do you already have clients, which are willing to confirm that they will work with you? For example in Berlin the requirements for that application looks like this: https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/328332/en/
You can read more about self-employment and also find counseling here.

Additionally, you can consult a migration counseling center to get more information how to strengthen your application, since they have more local experience with your responsible foreigners department. If you tell me where you currently live, I can support you or you can find one on the website from BAMF.

Thank you very much for the prompt response! I have already registered my business in Berlin and I have some clients, and letters of intent. I am working with a consultant as well. However, my reach is somehow limited and I am,too worried about financial stability. I am a Personal Development Coach for Women. What I initially need help with is creating a solid client base and second, a reasonable justification for this visa shift. Where do you think I should be looking for?

Congratulations on registering your business, @real !

I assume you already applied at your local foreigners department to be able to do extra freelance work? Please note that usually with an student residence permit this isn't allowed, except you applied specifically for it.

Regarding your argumentation for the switch, you should show that your business model is viable, you can secure your livelihood in the long term, your project provides economic value or is of special interest to Germany and you are pursuing a genuine professional perspective with it.
There are some helpful information provided by Existenzgründungsportal or Wir gründen in Deutschland

I hope this will help you! Wish you all the best!
Please let me know if you have further questions.
