Child citizenship

I am living in Germany more than 11 years and I have Daueraufenthalthskarte ( permanent residence permit) but not the niederlassungserrlaubnis. My baby born in Berlin and now 2 months old. I would like to know whether she is a German citizen by born or not because I did not get any information from standesamt yet

Hello @Towhid,

thank you for the question on our forum. Congratulations on your child!.

In general, if you have a permanent residence and have lived in Germany for at least 5 years then your child should automatically be given the German citizenship. The Daueraufenthaltkarte is also a form of permanent residence.

In general, the Standesamt will inform the immigration office and this process should be done automatically. Without you having to apply. However, if it takes longer, I would suggest contacting the authorities and asking again. I would suggest not waiting longer then 6 months for the application to happen.

Please visit our website for more information on Citizenship for Babies born in Germany.

Best wishes
