Entering Germany on the last day of Fiktionsbescheinigung

Hello. I have an appointment for my residence permit in Hamburg Welcome Center, and in the meantime a Fiktionsbescheinigung is issued for me. My current Fiktionsbescheinigung will expire soon, so I applied for an appointment for this as well, but still I haven't got anything. I am planning to travel abroad, and I am thinking about entering Germany one day before the expiration date. I am worried that the border police will make it difficult for me since the document is about to be expire. Am I safe with entering Germany with a Fiktionsbescheinigung expiring in one or two days?

Hi! You are legally safe to enter if it is still valid. Border police are required to recognise it, as long as it is still valid on the day of entry.

Best practice: Contact the Hamburg Welcome Center and request a Bescheinigung über den laufenden Antrag. This could keep you at peace even if you have it in e-version.

So yes, you are legally safe to enter if it is still valid, but try to get an extension asap.

Hope you make it!

I was in a similar situation a few months ago when my Fiktionsbescheinigung was close to expiry while I had travel plans. Generally, if your document is still valid on the date you enter Germany, you should be fine at border control – they usually check whether the validity period covers your entry. That said, if you’re entering just a day before it expires, it’s always a good idea to carry proof of your upcoming appointment at the Welcome Center Hamburg to show that your residence permit renewal is in process. It gives extra assurance in case they ask questions.

On a side note, since traveling and official procedures can get costly, I found it helpful to save on small but necessary things like passport photos or ID photos. If you ever need professional quality images for permits or residence applications, sites like FilterFotograf coupons can actually help you cut down costs a bit. Not huge savings, but every little bit counts when you’re dealing with residence paperwork and travel expenses.

Wishing you safe travels and smooth processing at the Welcome Center!
