Study

Excluded from University without warning.

I was a student at Saarland University. I arrived late for the semester because of some visa problems in my home country. Upon arrival I already had a backlog of 1.5 months and my exams were in a time period of two months. All this pressure didn't go well with my mental health. I had already been taking therapy for my anxiety/panic attacks in my home country and the academic pressure worsened my condition. So, I thought the best course of action would be take a semester break and work on my health so that I can better tackle my studies in the next semester.

I mailed my course coordinator regarding the my condition and my desire to opt for a semester break, to which she replied and asked me to apply for a semester break with a doctor's note, which would state that I am not fit to study for this semester.

For a list of reasons, like not having a housing contract and therefore my heath insurance not being activated, and the waiting time for a psychoanalysis in Germany (a few months) I couldn't provide them the doctor's note and within a matter of one month, I was excluded from the university without any warnings. I have been trying to present my case to them for the past few months but unfortunately have had no luck.

My visa is also about to expire, but what concerns me is my health condition so invisible to the institute that I will be excluded from the university I've tried so hard to get into?

What can I do to fight my case and get back into my university? I don't know what action, legal or otherwise, I can take now.

Thanking you in advance

SR

Hello @SR7 , thank you for asking your question on our platform and for reaching out to us. I am sorry that your university has reacted this way. It must be quite stressful. I would recommend that you seek out counselling, they can look at the situation with you and can help you take the next steps. It is also a good idea to get this doctors note as soon as possible, this is obviously easier said than done. But to have proof that you have tried to receive this doctors note is also quite valuable and can help your case.

I can recommend reaching out to a youth migration counselling center (JMD) if you are under 27. You can contact them via e-mail or phone and make an appointment: https://www.jugendmigrationsdienste.de/jmd/saarbrueckencaritas . If you are older than 27 then a migration counselling center can help you take the next steps. You can use the BAMF Navi to help you locate a counselling center near you. https://bamf-navi.bamf.de/en/Themen/Migrationsberatung/
. Please let me know if you have any further questions. It would also be great to hear your feedback from the counselling session.

Best wishes to you

Thank you for your reply ma'am. Since, I'm younger than 27 years old, I've contacted the JMD via email. I'm waiting for their reply and will keep you posted accordingly. Thanks Saalik

@Yara_Community Manger Hi Yara. Since my Visa is coming to it's expiration date, I'm enrolling in a private language school and take that enrolment letter to extend my visa. But, today I read this on the internet and it's been bothering me since. I quote, "If you plan to stay longer than 90 days in Germany and want to visit a language course you can apply for a language course visa. It states that you are going to learn the German language and allows you to stay between three and 12 months in Germany. Please note: A language course visa cannot be switched into another type of visa (student visa) afterwards. Therefore you need to leave the country after finishing your language course to apply for a possible student visa. You are not allowed to work." Could you tell me whether this scenario applies to me or not. I have had a student visa for the past six months but since I've been excluded now, I can't extend my student visa. Hoping for hear from you soon. Regards Saalik

Hi @SR7 , I will do some research and get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime could you let me know what website you read this information? Also, did you hear back from the JMD? Best wishes

@Yara_Community Manger Hi Yara. Thank you for getting back so quickly. I really appreciate it. It was some unofficial website which goes by the name "https://learn-german.com/". I also, unfortunately, didn't hear from JMD yet. Regards Saalik

Hi Seoyoung,

Well, things really went south afterwards. The university didn't budge an inch. I had to start looking for admissions in other universities and had to really start from scratch afterwards. I am still trying to find an admission in some other university. JMD was a little bit of help but, not really what I lacked at those moments. Hopefully, everything turns out just fine in the future. Fingers crossed.

Hi @SR7  ,

I'm sorry to hear that the university did not help you out and that you couldn't get exactly the help you needed from JMD.

I wish you best luck with finding an admission in another university and feel welcome to reach out to us anytime if you have specific questions.

Best wishes
