Extend Residency for Family or PR application

Hello,

I would appreciate some insights into how to handle this. I came to germany as a blue card holder, and I reunited with my family with the same visa type. I applied for a permit residency which I got late 2024. Now question is , is it possible for my husband and kids to apply for the same PR even though they do not have B1 german level, if not how and when shall I apply to extend their blue card residency.

Appreciate your help in advance.

Hello @Reemy - welcome to our forum!
Congratulations to your permanent residency!

As far as I understood your situation: You were the blue card holder before you got a permanent residency (PR). I assume your family members received a residence permit for family reunion or is your husband also working?

In Germany, family members of a Blue Card holder can also apply for a permanent residence permit under certain conditions. However, one key requirement for adults is usually a B1 German language certificate. Since your husband does not have B1, he may not yet qualify for PR.

Your children, depending on their age, may have different requirements. If they are young, they might not need a language certificate at all. You can find more information and the requirements here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/permanent-residence-migrants

If your family does not yet meet the PR requirements, they can extend their residence permits. Since they joined you as family members of a Blue Card holder, they can continue to extend their permits as long as you meet the financial and legal requirements.
You need to submit the documents as you did before at your local foreigners department. I am happy to support you to find the exact required documents, if you tell me in which city you live.

Please also let me know if you have further questions.
