Extension of Blue card

Hello everyone,

I was employed in Germany under a work contract from August 2, 2022, to July 31, 2024. Initially, I held a Researcher visa for the first six months. Later, I was granted an EU Blue Card on January 30, 2023, which remains valid until November 30, 2024. My work contract has now been extended until December 31, 2024. Since this extension overlaps by just a month with the expiry date of my Blue Card, I have been issued a Fiktionsbescheinigung along with a new work permit.

What steps should I take to extend my stay in Germany after my contract ends? As a Blue Card holder, am I eligible for a settlement permit since I would have worked in Germany for over 27 months by the end of my contract?

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hello @Bashab ,

I would suggest to apply for the Permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) as soon as possible. So please do not wait until you stop having the Blue card, it would be best to apply for the permanent settlement residence while you still hold the Blue card.

Please check if the following requirements apply to you, then you an already apply for the settlement permit.
If you have an EU Blue Card, you can obtain a permanent residence permit very quickly– you can apply for a permanent residence permit after 27 months with the EU Blue Card. You only need to have made pension insurance contributions for 27 months, have a suitable job and speak German at A1 level. If you speak German at level B1, you can obtain a permanent residence permit after just 21 months.
You can read more on the requirements here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/permanent-residence-migrants#faq_550

If your contract finishes and you do not have another job, which fulfill the requirements then it depends on the case worker, you will at least get an extension on your blue card for 3 months.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Best wishes

Dear Yara,

Thank you very much for all the information. I really appreciate it. I also apologize for my late reply.

One good thing is that I have  a new job starting from 1 Jan. So, the extension is not a big issue. However, I will see if I can get a settlement permit after October (I would have made 27 months of pension contributions by that time) as I am a blue card holder and I can speak A1 level German.

Thank you once again for your time. :)

Best wishes,

Hi,

I have to apply for an extension of residence permit for my new job starting from 1 Jan 2025. However, I have not found an apartment yet and my residence permit application requires me to submit a rental agreement. Do you know if can submit my application without the rental agreement? Do you know if a housing confirmation from my new employer will do?

Best,

Bashab
