Family Reunification

Family Reunification Conditions for Afghans

I am Sayed an Afghan refugee from Iran.

My brother is currently living in Germany with his family and he works in a Company. My question is, if I can apply for family Reunification through my brother? I have also worked for GIZ projects in Afghanistan and have sufficient documentation to prove my claim.

I appreciate you if you can reply my message at your earliest convenience.

Best Regards,

Jawad

Hello @jawad1360 , thank you for your question. Unfortunately, family reunification only applies to the immediate family such as underage children or spouses. So you cannot come to Germany through this family reunification process. You can read more here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/rights-laws/family-reunification-for-immi… Other ways to come to Germany would be to apply for a so called humanitarian visa with your employer the GIZ, you can find information how to do this here: https://handbookgermany.de/fa/afghanistan-info.html Please note that the regulations who receives this visa is quite strict. For example if you has a subcontract the GIZ is likely to refuse the application Lastly, you can also try and come to Germany through receiving a visa: https://handbookgermany.de/en/rights-laws/immigration.html I hope you will soon be able to greet your brother in Germany Best wishes Yara

Hello Yara, I am fine thank you. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for reaching out to me and and also your follow up. I have already submitted my application to GIZ office for their review in early August 2022. Actually, I have been worked with GIZ office in Afghanistan during 2015 and faced with some threats during my work. Unfortunately, I do not have any update information regarding my case status since submission of the application. I hope you can provide me with some advices over this issue. Best Regards, Jawad

Hello @jawad1360 , thank you for the update. I am sorry to hear that you have not had any response from the GIZ. Unfortunately, I cannot find out the status of your application. Maybe it is also useful to contact an NGO that helps local staff, have you done this? It is also important to know that if you did not have a direct contract with the GIZ it is likely that your application will be rejected. I have also some more information for you, regarding coming to Germany through your brother. If you brother makes a so-called deceleration of commitment or "Verplfichtungserklärung" and shows that he has enough money to support you financially. Then you can also receive a long-term visa to Germany. This only works for specific long term visa applications. More information on this can be found here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/declaration-of-commitment-national-visa Best wishes Yara

Thank you Yara for your valuable information. Actually i have been applied through GIZ official website after i received a reference number via this organization and gave my GIZ colleague's email address as a reference. I don't know actually how long this process will take? Do you think i will not get any notification if my case rejected by GIZ? About my Reunification, i need to talk with my brother and see if he can meet the requirements. Best Regards Jawad

Yes, you should be notified if you case is rejected. Unfortunately, the process is very opaque and I do not know how long this will take. I hope that you will soon get a reply from the GIZ! Best wishes Yara

Maybe you could also contact an NGO that specializes in helping local staff. Although they are often overwhelmed with too many request. Germany has really failed to take responsibility and many people are waiting for a long time for a response, often while being in danger.

I am actually confused what to do and how to track my case status! Naturally, an online tracking system need to be established by the German government and let the applicants notified about their case destination. I hope everything will get back to normal soon and GIZ become more responsive to its Afghan local staff.
