German Passport

Hello,

I’m from Ukraine, currently working and living in UAE, Dubai. My Ukrainian passport expire in November 2028 (4 years). With the current situation in Ukraine, I can’t apply for new passport as the law not allowing me to do it, because I need to do military service first.
Can I go to Germany, than apply for temporary residency for 1 year and than for permanent residency and in the future apply for German passport? Is 4 years of my Ukrainian passport enough to go trough this process?

Hello @ynwaman  , Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately 4 years to get a German passport is too short, you need to live in Germany for at least 5 years. If you are "particularly well integrated", i.e. you speak German very well (C1) and have been involved in voluntary work for several years, you can apply for naturalisation after 3 years: https://handbookgermany.de/en/citizenship#faq_145 If you have any further questions, please let us know. Best, Barbara

I will live more than 4 years in Germany, the question is, is it enough of 4 years valid passport to proceed for all the documents and steps to get passport in future, as I read that for applying process I can use my driver license instead of passport(after my passport will expire in 2028 November)

@ynwaman  If you were not living in Ukraine before the war and at the time the war broke out, you cannot apply for temporary protection in Germany. Even if you are already under temporary protection in other countries or have a temporary or permanent residence permit in other countries, it is more difficult to obtain temporary protection in Germany than for people who come directly from Ukraine and apply for this protection: https://handbookgermany.de/en/ukraine-info?themes=residence#faq_2315&nb…;

With regard to the processing of passports, you no longer have to provide proof of military training. Instead, verification is carried out via the official app of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence ‘Reserve+’ using a QR code.
You can find more information on the DP Document website: https://pasport.org.ua/news/vidnovleno-oformlennia-pasportnykh-dokument…. Since 24.07.2024, the foreign branches of DP ‘Document’ are again accepting applications for passport documents for men. Best Barbara

@Barbara Stasiak_Community Manager  thank you for great answer! I’m not planning to apply for temporary protection.

Im planning to get the job and as normal to get temporary residency for the first year and than to apply for permanent residency with the years

and after 5 years to apply for German Passport

do I need valid passport to apply for the documents if I’m not planning to traveling for 5 years outside the EU?
Till November 2028 passport is valid, as I mentioned above

@ynwaman  thank you for your respons. You need to have a passport or other documents (driving licence, birth certificate and such) which verify your identity–or you can prove that your home country is refusing to issue you any papers: https://handbookgermany.de/en/citizenship#faq_145 Best Barbara
