Greek EU Long Term Residence Permit

Hello there,

I have moved to Berlin 1,5 months ago and I am in the job seeking process. I am originally from Albania and I have a Greek long term residence permit. Can I be hired with this or do I need to apply for a German residence permit or working visa?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hello @Alex.bal89 , thank you for your question. Since you hold an EU long-term residence permit, you do have some rights to move to and reside in other EU countries — but with limitations.

Your EU long-term residence permit allows you to enter and stay in Germany for up to 90 days (e.g. to look for work or attend job interviews), but it does not give you the right to work in Germany or to stay long-term.

To take up employment or stay longer than 90 days, you must Apply for a German residence permit for the purpose of employment or job search, depending on your situation. Please check out the different visa options here: https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/

If you have any further questions, please let us know. Best Barbara

Hello @Barbara__Community_Manager & Thank you so much for your reply,

May I please ask since I am albanian can I obtain an ability to work from Federal
Employment Agency through the Western Balkans Regulation?

If that is possible what do I need to do to get one?

kind regards,

Hey @Alex.bal89 , as an Albanian citizen, you are eligible to work in Germany under the Western Balkans Regulation. However, you must be in Albania to apply for a visa through this program. There is a quota for these visas — usually on a monthly basis — and if your application falls within this quota, you can work in Germany. Additionally, if you try to wait for approval from the Employment Agency while staying in Germany, the process will still take longer than 90 days.

You could try to apply for the Opportunity Card in Berlin. Otherwise, after 90 days, you will need to leave Germany and apply for a job visa from Greece. Please, check the details here:

If you need support throughout the entire process, you can contact the immigration office:

If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Best Barbara
