IELTS required for university admission in Germany

Is IELTS required for university admission in Germany since I have completed graduation? Please guide me on which universities do not require IELTS.

Hello @ayyaz2024

Every university is free to define the criteria for application, so that it is not possible to give a general answer. However, many universities work together with uni assist, where you can find information on the most frequent questions regarding language certificates here: https://www.uni-assist.de/en/how-to-apply/assemble-your-documents/language-certificates/

Here, you can see that a proof that English was the language of instruction at a university you previously visited might be taken into account as well.

Please make sure the university cooperates with uni assist, otherwise check on the universities own website.

Best wishes

Hi there! Long story short - it depends on the university’s admission policy. So choose a uni and look through their requirements.

In Germany, IELTS is not always required — it depends on the language of instruction and the specific university’s admission policy.

If you’re applying for an English-taught program, most universities do ask for proof of English proficiency such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.
However, many universities accept alternatives, for example:

  • A letter from your previous university stating that your medium of instruction was English (“Medium of Instruction Certificate”).
  • Previous degree completed entirely in English (especially if it was from a recognized institution).
  • If you’re applying for a German-taught program, then IELTS isn’t needed — you’ll need to show German language proficiency (e.g., B2/C1 level with TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe certificate).

You can check the program’s requirements directly on DAAD’s official database — it lists English-taught programs and specifies which language proofs are accepted.

Hope this helps
