Inquiry About Changing Visa Status from Chancenkarte to Freiberufler

Hello, I currently have a valid Chancenkarte visa until 31.07.2025. On 24.07.2025, I submitted an application to switch to a freelancer (Freiberufler) visa, as it was not possible for me to extend the Chancenkarte.

According to the automated confirmation form I received by email from the Ausländerbehörde, I am allowed to remain in the country until I receive a response regarding my freelancer visa application (which could be approved or rejected). I would like to confirm that this is indeed the case.

If so, could you please explain how the process of waiting for a confirmation from the Ausländerbehörde works? Also, if I am indeed allowed to remain in the country until the Ausländerbehörde makes a decision, what would my legal status be during that period? Would I still be considered under the conditions of my previous Chancenkarte visa?

Thank you in advance

Hello @ro_b

thanks for coming to our platform and sharing your questions.
In general if you have applied for another residence title before your title ended and the immigration office has not decided yet, you will get a so called "Fiktionsbescheinigung".

Unfortunately, one has to wait some time for them to make a decision. You mentioned you have just received this confirmation mail and not a physical document. It might be worth asking if you will receive this "Fiktionsbescheinigung". Usually, you will be allowed to stay until a decision is made, under the same title as before.

You can find more information on the "Fiktionsbescheinigung" here:

let us know if you have any questions or updates.
Best wishes
