Language visa (not in preparation for studies) to Seeking a place at uni

Hallo Leute,

Is it possible to switch residency from a regular language permit into a prospective student/seeking a place at university residence permit? Unfortunately, the language course ends 2 months before the uni application opens.

Hey there ThaliaA 👋

I’m not an expert, but here’s some helpful info that might guide you.

It all depends on your local migration office (Ausländerbehörde). Contact your local Ausländerbehörde before your current permit expires and explain your situation. It’s sometimes possible to switch from a language course visa (§16f AufenthG) to a visa for seeking a study place (§17 AufenthG). Visas for study purposes are usually issued for a period of up to one year. The key point is that you must clearly show your intention and eligibility to study (for example, proof of a university entrance qualification can do the trick).

It is a good idea to ask if they can grant a Fiktionsbescheinigung (temporary permit) or directly issue a new residence title under §17 AufenthG.

You also need to meet the requirements of a Visa for study purposes and seeking a university place. The following basic requirements are:

1. To commence studying: Letter of admission for a course of study at a state or state-recognised university or confirmation of acceptance for a preparatory college or comparable educational institution and, if necessary, confirmation of acceptance for a preparatory programme.

2. To seek a university place: School-leaving certificate entitling the holder to enter higher education in Germany.

3. Sufficient language skills for the intended degree programme, unless a preparatory language course precedes the degree programme.

4. sufficient financial means to secure your livelihood for the duration of your stay in Germany. You can find more information in the next section.

Here are a few useful official resources:

So, first of all, go to the local Ausländerbehörde. It’s a good idea to bring all your study-related documents (language certificate, proof of education, intent to apply, etc.) to show that your stay purpose is continuous and serious.

You’re doing the right thing by planning ahead — definitely contact the Ausländerbehörde as soon as possible so you have time to sort everything out.

Good luck 💪

Hi Anna,

thank you so much for your advice. I‘ve sent an email now to my Ausländerbehörde. Fingers crossed!

Thank you very much Anna for your detailed response! This is very helpful.

Dear @ThaliaA please note that a residence permit under §17 AufenthG can only be issued if you meet all the requirements and can be valid for up to nine months.
Additionally, with that residence permit you are allowed to work up to 20 hours/week, which can secure your livelihood.

Wish you all the best. Please let us know if you have further questions.
