Marriage Visa

Good morning

I am an Australian living in Germany for the past 18years with my German born  son and German girlfriend. My visa runs out soon cause he turns 18. Is the only way to stay is through marriage? I’m pretty sure I can’t pass the b1 test but A1 I would pass. Would A1 be enough?

Thanks for reading my story and hope I’m able to get some input.

Hey @colinaus , thank you for getting in touch. Please, could you let us know which type of residence permit you currently have? Best Barbara

Hey @colinaus ,

Thank you for the information. Your residence permit should be extended at least until your child completes their vocational training or university studies. It's important to apply for an extension early and to provide proof of your son's training contract or university admission.

You can work on reaching your B1 level while your child is in training or studying, and then apply for the permanent residence ("Niederlassungserlaubnis"). Here's some detailed information:

Another option would be marriage. If you marry a German citizen, you could obtain a residence permit as a family member of a German citizen:

Please, check if the skilled worker visa is an option for you. You can apply for it from Germany:

Please, reach out the Migration Counselling Centre. They can guide you through the whole process and give you detailed information:

Hi Barbara

Thank you so much for all that information!

My son actually works for me as he was having a burnout at school and the only way was for me to employ him.

My German girlfriend and I are over 20 years together and are happily to get married though will they let me stay if I can’t pass the b1 or would b1 be enough?

I definitely will get in touch with Migration Counselling Centre.

I’m so great full for you reply and hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Best regards

Colin

Hi @colinaus , A1 is enough to get a residence permit through marriage to a German citizen:

It's good to hear that you're contacting the Migration Counselling Centre - they can help you further, step by step.

Best wishes
