Permanent Residence for a Blue card holder in case of layoff
Hello,
Could you please clarify the situation for a Blue Card holder who has worked for 27 months in Germany but was laid off due to the company’s financial situation before applying for permanent residence?
- Can I still apply for permanent residence after being laid off?
- Given that my Blue Card is still valid for another two years, will my status change after the layoff?
- What steps should I take in this situation?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hello, thank you for reaching out.
We have had similar questions on the platform, you are not alone with these questions. I will try to answer as best as I can.
1. As far as I know you can still apply for the permanent residence if you receive Arbeitslosengeld 1.
2. Yes, your status is likely to change. This is up to the office at the immigration office. But usually, the time of your Blue Card will be shortened. If you had the Blue Card for more then 2 years (which you did) the immigration office needs to give you 3-6months extension of the blue card. So, your Blue Card will only be valid for another 3-6months.
3. Please inform your Ausländerbehörde that you will or have lost your job as soon as possible. Please try and look for a job which fulfills the Blue card requirement as soon as you can.
I would also recommend you check out the following thread from a similar question maybe you can also exchange your experiences with the immigration office. This is a topic which is relevant to many

4.You can also think about applying for a Chancenkarte.
