Permanent residence with non-specialized

Hello, I would like to ask about permanent residence in Germany. If I came in German   opportunity card and i cannot find a job in my professional field, but I get a work contract in a supermarket, can I still qualify for permanent residence in the future with this job? Or do I need to work strictly in my field of specialization to be eligible?

Hello @Adam12 ,

thank you for your message.

You must submit your application for a different or permanent residence permit in Germany to your local immigration office. You can switch from the opportunity card to a follow-up residence permit if you meet the criteria for the other residence permits. These may include language skills or specialist knowledge in your profession. If you have found a part-time or full-time job in Germany through the Opportunity Card, this counts as a criterion for extending your stay in Germany. Switching to a residence permit for regular employment is possible. In principle, it is possible to switch to any other residence permit. There are no restrictions on switching.
However, it is not possible to obtain a settlement permit from the search opportunity card (§20a (5) sentence 1). From the “follow-up opportunity card” (§20a (5) sentence 2 AufenthG), a settlement permit is possible in accordance with §9 AufenthG. The time spent with the search opportunity card is taken into account.
