Question about citizenship chances after applying while receiving unemployment benefits

Hi,

I would like to ask for your advice regarding my situation and my chances of getting German citizenship.

I have been living in Germany since December 2019. I came here through marriage to my German ex-partner. He left in August 2022, and our divorce was finalized in April 2024.

I worked continuously for almost three years until September 2024, when my employer terminated my contract. Due to depression, I received sick pay (Krankengeld) until the end of 2024. After that, I applied for unemployment benefits (Arbeitslosengeld I).

I planned to start an Ausbildung as a nurse, but I was rejected after the interview because of my chronic illness (Multiple Sclerosis). After speaking with the Agentur für Arbeit, I submitted my documents to their medical service (Ärztliche Dienstleistung) to assess which jobs are suitable for me. I am still waiting for their response.

Meanwhile, I had already submitted my citizenship application in March 2024.
My question is: considering that I am now job-seeking and receiving Arbeitslosengeld, how high are my chances of my citizenship application being approved, or is there a risk it could be rejected because of my current situation?

I would be very grateful for any advice or if anyone has experience with a similar case.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hello bbhg68,

thank you for your question.

One of the requirements for naturalization is that you must have been in employment subject to social insurance contributions for at least 20 months in the last 24 months. The processing department also carries out an economic forecast to determine how secure your income will be in old age. If it turns out that a person is likely to be dependent on social benefits, this is disadvantageous for naturalization.

Since you have already submitted your application, I advise you to wait for the response from the naturalization authority. However, due to your current situation, there is a high probability that the application will be rejected. If this happens, you have the option of submitting a hardship application. Your case officer can advise you on this if it comes to that.

If you have further questions, you can write us on team-rlp@bzi-bundesintegrationsrat.de

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and wish you every success on your way to a German passport!

Kind regards

Zainah Sjawie
