Request for Guidance Regarding Proof of Identity for Naturalization

I have been living in Germany for the past ten years. During this time, I have not been able to provide a Tazkira (Afghan national ID) or a birth certificate. I now meet the requirements under §25 Abs. 2 and would like to apply for German citizenship.

Unfortunately, the relevant authority has asked me to clarify my identity, which has created a challenge for me. At the moment, the only solution I can think of is to contact the Afghan Consulate in Munich to apply for a passport.

However, as you may be aware, approaching the consulate of one’s home country while holding this type of protection status in Germany may result in losing that status. This is a major concern for me.

I kindly ask for your advice and would greatly appreciate any suggestions or alternative options you may have.

Hello @hunterguy thank you for reaching out to us!

It is great to hear that you meet the requirements for §25 Abs. 2!

It is absolutely understandable that you do not want to risk your protection status. To give you a more precise answer, may I ask whether you have already received the residence permit card (plastic card)? To support you more specifically, I would need to know the additional paragraph mentioned after §25 Abs. 2 - is it §3 or §4 of the Asylum Act (AsylG)?

Happy to get your feedback!

Good morning @Hunterboy,

thank you for explanations and question regarding the clarification of your identiy. Indeed the clarification is a mayor issue in the naturalization process and applies for everyone without exception. We are aware that for some citizens it is a greater challenge than for others (e.g. Somali, Afghanistan) because embassies are not working or governments are non-existent or nor recognised by the german government. However there is no chance to get the german passport without working really hard on clariyfying your identiy. The fact that you hold "Flüchtlingsstatus" doesn't change that pre-condition. For Afghan nationals that basically means to address any embassy in Germany that may issue a Tazkira or a passport for you. Some people even got it from Dubai. Maybe it makes sense to get in touch with other afghan nationals to ask them about their experiences and recommendations.

Good luck on your way to the german nationality.

Susanne
