Travelling

Good day!

I'm currently living in Germany for almost 2 years now and i have a work permit(1 year valid). Previously i lived in Italy and have a Permanent Residence permit, I renewed last year cause it was expiring this February so i currently have the receipt of the renewal. This July i have to go back to Italy for the appointment of the renewal. I wanted to ask if is there gonna be any problem at the airport , is it alright if i show them my german work permit instead of the receipt. Also i wanted to travel around Italy for a couple of days.
Just to feel secure cause airpor controls terrifies me .

Dear @aslehey thank you for reaching out to us!

With a valid residence permit for Germany & passport, you are allowed to travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days within 180 days. So for your upcoming travel, you are very unlikely to face any problems at the airport.

Additionally, may I ask whether you hold a EU permanent residence permit in Italy, a so-called permesso di soggiorno UE per soggiornanti di lungo periodo?
Please note that we cannot provide legal advice and do not have detailed knowledge of the Italian immigration law. In general though, it is not allowed to hold two national residence permits at the same time - even if they are issued by two EU countries. Unless one of them is a EU permanent residence permit. You can find more information about it on Handbook Germany.
For example, in Germany a residence permit usually expires after 6 (for EU Blue Card 12) months after leaving to another country. So if your Italian permit is not the permanent EU type, you might want to check with the Italian authorities to ensure yours remained valid.

I assume you have everything in order, just wanted to double-check, that you can keep both residence permits.
Wish you a safe trip! Please let me know if you have further questions!

Based on your message, since you're currently living in Germany with a valid work permit, that should generally allow you to travel within the Schengen Area (which includes Italy). Your German residence permit essentially grants you freedom of movement for short trips within Schengen countries, like for tourism or appointments.

Since you also have the receipt for your Italian permanent residence renewal, I recommend carrying that with you along with any supporting documents—such as proof of your appointment, the expired Italian permit, and anything showing your legal stay in Germany (like your work contract, residence registration, etc.).

Even though it's unlikely you'll face serious issues, having everything on hand can help ease your nerves and show that you're being transparent and responsible if asked.

Wishing you a smooth trip and a lovely time in Italy!
You're doing everything right—just keep calm and be confident in what you have.
