type of residence permit for a researcher visa

Hello,

I recently arrived in Germany with a researcher visa to complete the last six months of my PhD program from an Italian university. I came from Italy, where I was admitted as a PhD student from my original country (third nation). It means that I also have an Italian study residence permit valid for one year from now.

I was wondering what type of residence permit do I get with a researcher visa? What should I do if I want to stay in Germany and look for a job after these six months?

Thank you very much for your reply.

Hello @shan25

As far as I understand, you are staying in Germany under the "18e Kurzfristige Mobilität für Forscher*innen" (short-term mobility for researchers) status. This status gives you the opportunity to apply for a qualified working status. This status includes the following options, the details of which you can check on our relevant pages:

Visa for qualified workers: https://handbookgermany.de/en/visa-skilled-workers

Blue Card: https://handbookgermany.de/en/eu-blue-card

This process also requires you to obtain recognition of your academic/occupational education. After that, if you find a qualified job, the options I mentioned above might become available to you. (I advise you to check the specific conditions, especially the wage requirements for the Blue Card and the requirement that your job matches your recognized field of expertise.)

Another option for you is to apply for an Opportunity Card. This visa is valid for one year and, if you have your qualifications recognized, gives you the right to stay in Germany for one year to search for qualified employment. However, for this visa you need to prove how you will cover your living expenses in Germany (through a blocked account or guarantor).

You can find information about this on our page:

https://handbookgermany.de/en/opportunity-card

I hope this information was helpful.

With my regards,

Eren.
