Visa status for my son who goes to another country for bachelors
Hello Team,
I'm a Blue Card holder, living in Germany from April 2022. My son will complete his school from an International School in 2026 June and he is interested to study his bachelors degree in Italy. He is on the Blue card dependent residence permit right now. I have already applied for my permanent settlement permit and I don't know when I will get an appointment call from the Ausländerbehörde. By the time my son goes out to Italy, he would have completed 4.5 years in Germany. Would he lose his eligibility to apply for EU PR if he takes up bachelor studies in Italy? His primary residence would still be in Germany with me. What are our options?
Thanks
Hi! I’m not a legal expert, but here’s some information that may help.
For the EU long-term residence permit (EU-Daueraufenthalt), one of the key requirements is 5 years of continuous legal residence in Germany (or in the EU under certain conditions). Short stays abroad for studies or work usually do not automatically break this continuity, as long as the person’s main residence remains in Germany.
If your son moves to Italy just for studies but keeps his official residence in Germany (registered address, health insurance, etc.) and regularly returns, then in many cases this can still count toward the 5 years. However, if he officially de-registers in Germany and establishes permanent residence in Italy, then the time in Italy may not count toward his EU PR in Germany.
Since these rules can be complex, I’d recommend confirming directly with your local Ausländerbehörde and also checking the official resources:
It would be a good idea to keep documentation of his residence and ties to Germany while he studies abroad.
Hope this helps
Anna
