Changing to a work visa during first year of Ausbildung

Hello everyone!

I am from Pakistan and I moved to Germany in August to pursue an Ausbildung as A Salesperson in retail. I have 13 years of education (University entrance qualification) and 3 years of work experience working at IndieCampers (remotely from Pakistan).

Now, I don't find this Ausbildung as a right fit for me and I believe my skills are not being used here. As I worked with IndieCampers and was a team leader there, they offered me an on-site full time job position in Hamburg. My question is, "Am I allowed to change to a full time job like this?" I would very much appreciate guidance on this!

I will get my Aufenthaltstitels in a few days, if that matters

Hello @Aseer

and thank you for your question. It is difficult to answer your query without knowing the exact details, especially possibel restrictions in your individual visa or the content of your secondary school. Please also note that I am not an immigration lawyer or certfied legal counsellor, and double-check your individual case with a migration counselling office in your region.

For a work visa, in general you need at least a formal vocational degree certifying 2 years of learning (also from schools with a vocational orientation). For people without a first qualifying vocational education or university degree, the options for immigration are mainly Ausbildung or studying at university.

Anyway, in the long run, it makes a lot of sense to invest the time for a professional degree like Ausbildung, because you can progress and develop with further education and therefore improve your income in the future. People without Ausbildung or university degree typically do not progress as easily as others in their responsabilities. Even if you fill a certain role in one company, it is not guaranteeed that without a degree you will be able to maintain this level of responsability and income when a change of employer happens to occur.

Thus, I would advise to consider continuing an Ausbildung, possibly also in another profession or with another employer, in case you are not satisfied. Check with your local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) for counselling and orientation projects or services. You can find the IHK responsibel for your region here: https://www.ausbildung-macht-mehr-aus-uns.de/

All the best!

Hannes
