Request Chancenkarte from Germany

After graduating with my master's degree in Germany, I applied for an 18-month job seeker visa, which will expire in June 2025. Currently, I am employed, but I am not yet sure if my company will extend my contract. As a backup plan, I am considering applying for a Chancenkarte, as I fulfill the requirements. However, I am unsure whether I can apply for a Chancenkarte from Munich or if I need to return to my home country to apply. On May 2024, I received a letter saying that after 18 months a further stay was only possible if, either I have found a job appropiate to my academic degree, or I decide to work as self-employed but also in relation to the subject of my study.

Hi @Mar thank you for your question,

indeed we receive many questions regarding the possible of job loss or job change. You can find other questions in the forum an connect with the community.

Here is one example.

If you were employed for more then 12 months you have the right to receive unemployment benefits. You can calculate here how much unemployment benefits you would receive:

In order to apply for the Chancencarte 20a residency law, you do not need to leave Germany, but you need to check the requirements. One of the main requirements is that you can provide your own livelihood, meaning you are not allowed to receive Bürgergeld.
You can proof this by showing that you have saving, regular income, or enough unemployment benefits / Arbeitslosengeld 1. You can find the requirements and more information on the Chancenkarte here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/opportunity-card

In general, if you lose your job, it is important that you inform the immigration office within two weeks.

Maybe @Faire Integration BB also has some further information for you.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Best wishes

Hi @Mar, I have some additional information for you.

If you haven't done so already and if you still have the job. I recommend that you, as soon as possible, inform the immigration office that you have received a job, if the job fits into the requirements for a skilled job then you can apply for skilled workers residence according to §18a or §18b of the residence law.
In the application you should include the contract.

Please also let me know if you have any updates.
Best wishes
